Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricanes are dangerous. They often create damage from flooding, storm surges, and high winds. In the event that a hurricane is heading to your area, it is important to prepare in advance and create a safety plan for you and your family. Take these steps before, during, and after a hurricane strikes to help keep your loved ones safe.

Before the Hurricane Strikes

Make sure your loved ones and property are prepared:

  • Assemble an emergency survival kit: include a flashlight, water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, etc.

  • Create an evacuation plan for the entire household, including pets.

  • Stay up to date on the storm and information provided by your local authorities. If TV or internet goes out, use a battery powered radio to stay tuned in.

  • Keep important documents in a safe place. Keep all important documents and irreplaceable items in a water and fire-proof container, it’s also a great idea to make copies and store those in a different location than the originals

  • Place protection over windows with plywood or storm shutters.

  • Secure outdoor surroundings. Loose furniture and other items can be blown away during a storm, possibly causing further damage.

  • Get flood insurance through a trusted agency such as I & E Insurance Agency so that you’re always protected.

  • Make sure rain gutters are secure and clear of any debris.

  • Be prepared to evacuate at any time, don’t wait until the last minute. It may be too late.

During the Hurricane

The safest place to be during a hurricane is indoors on the lowest level of the home, unless flooding is present. Remain indoors for as long as possible until the storm is over and follow these other crucial measures:

  • Stay away from beaches, river banks or other bodies of water.

  • Use flashlights instead of candles if the power goes out.

  • Avoid floodwaters in case of contamination.

  • Turn off power and water mains only if local authorities inform you to.

  • Stay up to the date with the storm and follow guidelines by local authorities.

If you’re outdoors:

  • Avoid floodwater. This water is usually highly contaminated.

  • Find shelter. Do not stay outside if you can avoid it.

  • Do not stay in areas that typically flood.

After the Storm

Once the hurricane is over, it is important to follow directions given by your local authorities.

Take these steps after a hurricane:

  • Contact friends and family to let them know you are safe.

  • Return home if you’ve evacuated and are told by authorities that it is safe to do so.

  • Stay up to date on information regarding the storm.

  • Contact your insurance agent for assistance if support is needed from your flood insurance provider.

Hurricanes can be very dangerous and frightening to experience. Through the right precautionary measures, you can help keep yourself, your loved ones, and your property safe. Make sure that you are properly covered in the event of a hurricane, contact I & E Insurance today to explore flood insurance options and protect your property.
