What is Dental Insurance?

Did you know that about 27 percent of American adults have untreated cavities? Did you know that over half of adults suffer from some level of gum disease? These dental conditions are easily treated yet many people fail to seek treatment due to the high cost of dental care. Dental insurance pays a portion of the costs associated with preventative exams and restorative treatment of dental conditions. It offsets the high cost of dental care, but to get the most of your benefits, you must first understand your policy and your options. There are several different types of dental insurance plans: Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), Dental Health Managed Organizations (DHMO), and Indemnity Plans. Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) Under a PPO, you are reimbursed for a portion of the costs associated with care for a select number of covered services. While you could get services from any licensed dentist, choosing an in-network provider will result in lower out-of-pocket costs. Dental Health Managed Organizations (DHMO) Under DHMO, you must pick an in-network dentist to act as your primary care provider. From there, you encur benefits when receiving care, but only if you receive care from your primary care provider or a dentist referred by them. Indemnity Plans Under an indemnity plan, you are reimbursed for a portion of the costs for covered services of any licensed dentist.

Dental Insurance vs Medical Insurance

Though both medical insurance and dental insurance provide coverage for regular preventative care, there are some distinct differences between both. Medical insurance only covers the costs associated with dental services in limited situations - like complicated surgeries or damage as the result of an accident. Conversely, dental insurance typically covers the routine with the exception of a few non-routine services. These non-routine services are covered at a lower rate than routine care.

What do Dental Plans Cover?

Dental plans don’t cover any cosmetic dental procedures like bleaching or complicated surgeries done in a hospital. That said, dental insurance plans provide coverage for:

  • Exams
  • Teeth cleanings
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Sealants
  • X-Rays
  • Fillings
  • Extractions and other surgery procedures
  • Periodontal treatments
  • Root canals
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures
  • Orthodontics (for children up to 19)
  • Emergency services and anesthesia

Why Do I Need Dental Insurance?

Put plainly, dental insurance limits the financial risk of many major dental expenses. Because dental insurance covers routine visits, this is also an affordable way to ensure that you are receiving the care that you need to maintain good oral health.
